So,
I’ve been up the bung of Twitter for the last few months. What started off as an attempt to generate interest in Bamn has pretty much turned into another social network time-waster. Arrogantly, I admit that I jumped on the Twitter band-wagon
before Google, and I had began to think of ways to create content from
my “Tweets” long before MSN decided to (which ultimately amounts to nothing). One idea I had was to do Twitter-length movie reviews. Between writing
Bamn, writing blogs, writing reviews for
OfNote, writing anything the
DCC will throw at me, and repeatedly correcting my typos, I don’t get the chance to write every review I want to. I figured a review at a maximum of 140-characters would allow me that chance.
Below are a few recent things I’ve watched or re-watched during the past few months. Now, the catch is that if you include the film’s title then a lot of these will probably go over the Tweet-specific character count. To which I say, “Ah, well.”
X-Men Origins: WolverineGoes the long and cheap route to tell an already convoluted story. Marvel probably leaked this to the internet to shame Fox.
The Devil’s RejectsNow I know why I’ve always liked Rob Zombie: He hates Hollywood pretention more than I do.
I Love You, ManThe film, just like actor Paul Rudd, is warm without losing its’ manliness. I refuse to use the word “bromance.”
The Last Boy ScoutIt’s 1990, and screenwriter Shane Black clearly hated women, but his dialogue is as rapid as the gunfire.
Justice League: New FrontierDull adaptation of Darwyn Cooke’s acclaimed comic. Only hints at the political commentary, then opts to leave it behind.
Monsters vs. Aliens A visual appetizer. Colbert as President and the 50-foot woman using convertibles as roller skates. What’s not to love?
TraitorA Muslim’s perspective on terrorism. Good intentions, but it ultimately adds up to “been there done that.”
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless MindIf every generation needs a film that encapsulates their take on romance, then this would be mines…well, minus the sci-fi parts.
Inglorious BastardsThe original is not as schlocky as I had hoped. Some good one-liners and Nazi-bashing. Why does the racist dude get the girl?
Dazed and ConfusedYou wish your high school experience was as timeless as this one. Every teenager should watch this.
The Day The Earth Stood StillLaughably, Keanu makes a great alien. Unnecessary remake feels phoned in at the last minute --- all 104 of them.
Adventureland
Tastefully made summer-time film. Each character has layers, which helps a lot.
Observe and ReportMean-spirited comes to mind. I enjoy cynicism, but the laughs aren’t persistent enough to take the harshness off.
