[Reviews] Saw VI
Saw VI
Directed by Kevin Greutert
Written by Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan
Starring Tobin Bell, Betsy Russell, Costas Mandylor, Mark Hoffman, Shawnee Smith, William Easton, and Pamela Jenkins
Like a self-destructive 11th grader with ear-piercings and a Slipknot T-Shirt, Saw has always been, simultaneously, laughable and a little troubling for me. I like violence as much as any child reared on comic books and action movies, but “torture porn” thinly masking itself as a morality tale…they’ve got websites for that (and without the holistic mumbo jumbo). Apparently, writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan figured this out, because Saw IV opts to be much more topical then its’ predecessors allowing it to shake its’ label as “a poor man’s Se7en.” If just for a moment.
Lt. Mark Hoffman (Costas Mandylor) has picked up the pieces of the Jigsaw killer. Initiated in one of the previous films (choose one), Hoffman has been instructed by the original/dead “Jigsaw” via videotape* to target William Easton. Easton is a heartless exec at a faceless insurance company, the type of organization that denies their policy holders by rummaging through every inconsistency in their medical history. Easton is too late to realize that one of the insured that he rejected is Jigsaw (Tobin Bell, who should win an award for skin-crawling).
Bleeding and disoriented, Easton has to hobble through an abandoned zoo to decide the fate of his colleagues, denying them elaborate deaths by steam pipes that boil the skin, merry-go-rounds triggered to a shot gun, or chemical baths that’ll soak you to the bone.
For once, the Saw series decided to tackle something relevant, creating a film that isn’t really commenting on our current political/moral head-butting, but, at the very least, invests you in its’ outcome because of it. The end result still adds up to more of the same, but it’s this additional undertone that makes the body counts almost noteworthy, and the end result (I’m going to go there), almost emotional.
*Just a thought…If the LAPD really wanted to catch the Jigsaw killer and his multiple copycats you’d think they would follow the trail of videotapes that Tobin Bell posthumously leaves for his apprentices. The guy must spend a fortune on video equipment. Start patrolling the local Best Buy and arrest his @$$!

[Artsy Fartsy] Tim Burton
While I'm not always a fan of filmmaker Tim Burton's storytelling abilities, I am a huge fan of his designs. For me, Burton's world (as seen in Batman, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, and Sleepy Hollow) is always a reminder of why I go to the movie's in the first place...to see reality knocked on it's head and bleeding.
The Museum of Modern Art has recognized Tim Burton's bizarre outlook and has dedeicated a whole exhibit to the filmmakers art. Very interesting stuff. Makes me wonder what his living room looks like.

[Trailer Trash] Under the Salt
While the trailer for Bajo La Sal isn't going to set the world of horror ablaze...it has promise. As of late, Spanish horror (The Orphanage, Pan's Labyrinth, The Others) is giving Japanese horror a run for it's money, putting the American stuff to shame and recognizing the talents of filmmakers from other countries.
There use to be a time when the only foreign films that got recognized in America we're kung-fu flicks and dreary melodramas...times are a changing.

[Trailer Trash] Kick Ass
At this point, the concept of the comic book movie is old hat. While I'll probably never tire of them, I can completely understand joblo being sick of their inevitable arrival every summer. Which is why I'm always happy to see a comic book film that puts the genre on it's @$$...challenging expectations and cliches.
Case in point: Kick Ass. From director Matthew Vaughn (Layer Cake, Stardust) and, pessimist/comic scribe, Mark Millar (Ultimates, Wanted), it's based on a superhero comic that is equally a send-up on the genre and an homage.

[Bamn] Fail Boat
Jay's computer (fresh off the addition of a Wacom tablet) died this past weekend. A virus hit his hardrive, causing his Alienware to commit seppuku. Thank, God, he backs up his hard drive on a regular basis. What does this spell for Bamn #3? A minor setback. Jay is working hard on re-building his computer (same size, just as strong, not necessarily faster). I'm still sticking to our unofficial release date of February 2010. (see what I did there?)
In other non-news, last week I did a small redesign to http://www.bamncan.com/Nothing earth-shattering (same great taste), I just went and cleaned up some of the more important sections on our blog. I'm a bit O.C.D. about clutter, so I trimmed some of the unnecessary links, opting to go for less is more.
You can now find clearer links to the preview pages of Bamn #1, Bamn #2, and Crystal Clear #1 on the right sidebar, including more pages to preview (just click the cover image) . Our subscribe button is also featured prominently on the sidebar, as well as, a revised version of our "About the Creators of Bamn," a new version of "About Bamn," a clear list of the different blog labels, and re-links to purchase Bamn and Crystal Clear (apparently, the old links we're broken).
Click around. You have no excuse to not buy anything now. Well, except that recession nonsense.
See you next week,
Troy

[Movie Reviews] Where The Wild Things Are
Where the Wild Things Are
Directed by Spike Jonze
Written by Dave Eggers
Starring Max Records, Catherine Keener, James Gandolfini, Catherine O’ Hara, Forest Whitaker, Chris Cooper, and Lauren Ambrose.
At the moment, it’s kind of popular to rag on the current “hipster” subculture…almost unnecessarily so. So it brings me no real joy (maybe a little) to say that Where the Wild Things Are is too hipster-y --- a victim of the liberal arts instead of a product of fantasy.
Max Records plays “Max.” A hero for the Ritalin generation, Max is overly energetic and prone to emotional outbursts. His older sister is completely disinterested in Max’s snow forts, and his single mother (Catherine Keener) is trying to revive her sex life to his violent disapproval. Inexplicably (let’s just say it’s the power of imagination), Max sails to a land where the wild things…be at.
It is to the credit of director Spike Jonze (Adaptation, Being John Malkovich) and his talented crew that the “wild things” are the spitting image of Maurice Sendak’s original story. The monsters emote and interact believably (even when Jonze seems uncomfortable with directing their C.G. elements) and are simultaneously voiced with warmth and aggression (specifically, James Gandolfini). Unfortunately, that is kind of where the film’s accessibility ends.
The problem with Where the Wild Things Are isn’t that it is a story about acceptance (thematically, it’s a reasonable choice), but the fact that the film is completely disinterested in being accepted. It’s very much a filmic hipster in that regard. It’s ambiguous like a hipster, ironic like a hipster, modish like a hipster, and even goes as far as to invite the spastic vocals of hipster muse Karen O (of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs). Without giving too much away, the movie isn’t that complicated, it’s just fairly unsatisfying for those reasons.
Spike Jonze (hipster that he is) is more interested in the potential pretentiousness of the story instead of embracing its target audience: family. I had a similar problem with his previous film Adaptation. The difference there is that Adaptation is clearly meant to be inside the writer’s head. My own personal dislike isn’t really as relevant under those circumstances. Here, Jonze has the unrealistic weight of meeting the expectations of a handful of generations who have grown up with Sendak’s book. While he doesn’t completely bastardize the story (hard to do with a book that is minimal on words), he over thinks it instead of scores.

[Bamn] Props to Comixpress for Giving Us Props

I caught this a bit late, but wanted to share...
Comixpress.com (Bamn's home for Print-On-Demand) was recently featured on Cerebus TV. Cerebus TV is a internet video show by Dave Sims. Sims is an indie comic God and his work on the comic book called Cerebus is the stuff of legend in the world of small press.
Cerebus TV is intended to regularly highlight independents, a move that is much needed in light of Diamond Comic Distribution's recent decision to limit certain self-published titles.
At the Small Press Expo back in September, The Bamn Crew had an opportunity to sit down with Comixpress' head honcho Logan DeAngelis (and one of the main guys at ButtonMonkey.com) . Honestly, we couldn't ask for a better group of people to be involved with. Expect BIG things from Comixpress in the near future.
The Cerebus TV video details the inner-workings of Comixpress and, coincidentally, features a few glamor shots of Bamn #1 and Crystal Clear.

[Trailer Trash] Ninja Assassin
I was ready to write this one off as another attempt by stupid gaijin to make a kung-fu film (that hardly ever works out). Then I looked at the credits and saw that it was co-written by J. Michael Straczynski.
JMS has written some of the most influential comics in the last decade. He's also the creator of Babylon 5, and the screenwriter for Clint Eastwood's Changeling.
The guys got range, too bad Marvel never knew what to do with him while he was there (although leaving him alone to do his thing would've been a good start).

007 [AndroidMassacreSecretTransmission] Wii Baby
I must dispense with all formalities, kind reader...
My 9-day campaign through Tanzania to stop the Android Massacre was fruitless. Captain Kajembe and I (along with 17 members of the Tanzanian army) were stopped at the northern most region of Lake Victoria. Our mission was to confront Ugandan President Yoweri kaguta Museveni about the impending robot revolt. It was our hope that Museveni would put aside the rivalry between Uganda and Tanzania for the greater good of humanity. We we're wrong.
We were fired upon by the Uganda People's Defense Force at Lake Victoria. The attack sunk our inflatable rafts and caused 4 of our members to drown...but the U.P.D.F. weren't finished. Apparently, they had reinforcements in the form of flying Wii Babies. The rosey-cheeked terrors cried tears of acid and slung re-inforced diapers filled with napalm. They burned away at Captain Kajembe and what was left of the rest of his troops.
I can still hear their screams and gurgles.
The only reason I am still alive to write this is due to the rescue of Private Nasiche, the only female member of Kajembe's troops. She pulled me out of the water and swam me to safety.
Gun in hand, beautiful, brave Nasiche ran towards the opposition, telling me to return to my time and warn the world...continue the fight against the Ro3ot0verl0rd. She was convinced that the Wii babies we're being controlled by the U.P.D.F. via Wiimote. I tried to call out to her...warn her that the Wii babies we're sentient now...nothing was controlling them.
It was 6 hours before the Android Massacre. It was already too late.
Nasiche, I promise you the world will know of your sacrifice and your death will not be for naught.
I think I love you.
The warning signs were already there: http://kotaku.com/5394621/latest-wiimote-attachment-baby

[Bamn] Preview Art for Bamn #3
I've been dropping the fact that we are almost done with Bamn #3 for about two months. Really! Don't believe me? Well...

Artist Jay Payne has been re-doing most of the pages for Bamn #3 since he got his shiny new Wacom tablet. The damn thing is space-age, allowing Jay to draw everything on his computer screen. Jay can even rotate it for accuracy.
Visually, the comic has undergone some changes in the last year, but I think the style that the Wacom will provide suits the book well. These pages seem to indicate the interesting things to come.
