I'm changing up my "Artsy Fartsy" label...from here on out, I'm dedicating it to Wallpapers from featured artist. Why? Well, A) It makes it easier for me to find them and post them quickly and B) Nowadays, art isn't impressive unless you want it on your desktop.

[Bamn] Cover to Bamn #3 revealed!

Not a hoax! Not a figment of your imagination! Bamn #3 does exist and here is the proof! Jay has been working intensely to figure out the best way to grayscale the interiors of Bamn, as well as strengthen the colors on the cover.
Told you we were really working on issue #3! (or maybe we just made a cover and it still doesn't exist.)
BTW, DCC is having their monthly meeting at the National Portrait Gallery. Darwyn Cooke (DC: New Frontier, Catwoman, The Hunter) is giving a lecture there on Saturday (1/30/2010) and we all intend to be there: http://comicsdc.blogspot.com/2009/11/130-darwyn-cooke-at-national-portrait.html

The day robots teach us how to speak is the day that humanity has fallen backwards on the evolutionary scale. Unfortunately, that day came in June of 1978 with the introduction of Texas Instrument’s Speak and Spell. Publicly, Speak and Spell was intended to help children with vocabulary and pronunciation. The truth is that Speak and Spell was Phase 1 of the Ro3ot0verl0rd’s master plan, an insidious plot to corrupt our youth and make them comfortable with the idea that computers know what’s best for us.
Each new version of Speak and Spell contained certain words that were installed into the device’s “expansion module,” filled with non-sense words that didn’t exist before 1978, such as “Google” and “neo-conservative.” Once these words began to enter the lexicon, the Ro3ot0verl0rd could begin Phase 2 of its’ quest to enslave humanity…Lady Gaga.

[Comic Book Review] S.W.O.R.D.
S.W.O.R.D.
Written by Kieron Gillen
Art by Steven Sanders
$2.99
Marvel Comics
I hoped that the recent Marvel/Disney merger would keep some of Marvel's lesser-selling titles (READ: better) off the chopping block. Apparently, it's still too early to rescue S.W.O.R.D. from that black hole. This week, news came down that S.W.O.R.D. was being pulled. That's a real testicle-popper, kids, 'cause S.W.O.R.D. was one of the few X-related titles that wasn't muddled in crossovers.
The book (which is scheduled to get ganked at issue #5) was a spin-off of the characters introduced in Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men run. The idea is that S.W.O.R.D. (which stood for "Sentient World Observation and Response Department") handled all the crazy alien-$#!+ that floated above the Marvel Universe. After the events of Tie-In Invasion, S.W.O.R..D. gained criticism from the world's government for not doing their job. Green-haired bad @$$ and director of S.W.O.R.D, Abigail Brand now has to share leadership with government lapdog and long-time X-Men foil Henry Peter Gyrich. Beast from the X-Men makes frequent appearances (remember, Brand and him hooked up at the end of Astonishing) as well as a growing cast of hilarious and/or mysterious extra-terrestrials.
S.W.O.R.D. may sound too geeky for anybody who hasn't read a Marvel book in the last 3 years, but the series sustains you by complementing intrigue with satire (very Whedon-esque). It also has the luxury of being disconnected from the core Marvel Universe, yet also a byproduct of it. This means that the series can allow new readers to sample what's going on around the book in small doses, and simultaneously welcome you to it's pages with little confusion.
To me, titles like S.W.O.R.D. (with Wisdom, Nextwave, Alias, and Captain Britain & MI-13) keep these ridiculously bloated comic book universe together. They re-establish C-list characters and address neglected plot points that crossovers have no time for (in this case, the fate of Kitty Pryde). Also, S.W.O.R.D. served as a better follow-up to Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men than the existing Warren Ellis run.
If something like Spider-Girl can resurface from cancellation every 6 months, then their is no reason Brand and her motley crew of space freaks can't either. Nerdery Blog, with the support of the books creators (Kieron Gillen and Steven Sanders) and Bleedingcool.com, are queuing up a campaign to get S.W.O.R.D. to continue. If you're a Joss Whedon fan (because, let's face it, quite a few of these characters we're created by him) then summon your Firefly-resurrecting powers and join the cause @ NerderyBlog.com.

[Bamn] Hi...

Uh, hey! How are things? Good, good.
*Ahem*
Man, the weather is crazy, huh? Cold one day. Hot the next. Weird.
So, yeah...
I, uh...uh, um...OKAY, OKAY! I got nothing to update this week! Nothing! It's all the same as last week: the art for Bamn #3 ain't finished, I haven't wrote #4, SPX isn't for 8 months, and last week when Jay and I met, all we did was watch Hurt Locker! There! You got me! I said it. Maybe I'll have something next week. Move on. Nothing to see here...

A Decade in Review: What Movies of the ‘00s Say About American Culture
I was too young to reflect on the ‘80s and very indifferent to the ‘90s, but the ‘‘00s (come to think of it…what do we call the past decade exactly?) happens to be the first decade that I won’t need a teacher to recount or analyze.
From 9/11 to the election of the first African-American president, these nameless 10 years will no doubt go down in history books as a turning point. Yet, “the aughts” have already proven that we are moving further and further away from the printed word anyway. Our children will be rediscovering the turbulence of this decade through podcasts and YouTube videos. The media and how we use the media has changed and (for better but probably worse) entertainment has succeeded where newspapers and magazines have failed.
Movies have always served as an example of the times we live in, and by default, now more than ever, they will depict our lives for future generations. All the movies on this list are placed in order of likeability but, as a bonus, I wanted to acknowledge the first decade I ever gave a damn about by detailing what some of them say about American culture between the years 1999 and 2KX. Read on…
25.
Netflix says: Convinced their little Olive (Abigail Breslin) is beauty queen material, parents Richard (Greg Kinnear) and Sheryl (Toni Collette) load the rest of the family into a van and embark on a life-altering road trip to a California pageant. Richard pushes Olive to win while her silent brother (Paul Dano), depressed uncle (Steve Carell) and nursing-home reject grandpa (Alan Arkin, in an Oscar-winning role) add their own quirks to the mix.
What it says about the aughts: While films have often examined the imperfections of home life, Little Miss Sunshine is only partially about familial dysfunction and really about the adage that “beauty is only skin deep.” Again, not really pertinent to issues of the last decade until the film’s finale, in which you get to see the scary world of youth-driven beauty pageants. The film depicts “talent competitions” as exploitive and devoid of innocence, serving as a reminder that the pursuit of recognition is causing today’s youth to grow up too fast.

22.
Netflix says: In a futuristic world, human beings have destroyed Earth and evacuated the planet, leaving the cleanup to an army of robots they've programmed to do their dirty work. Due to a mishap, the dutiful WALL-E is the only one left. But with the arrival of a female probe, the monotony of WALL-E's existence is broken -- and he experiences love for the first time. Andrew Stanton directs this Golden Globe- and Oscar-winning Pixar tale with a sci-fi twist.
What it says about the aughts: This decade, after years and years of neglect, the environment stepped to the forefront. While documentaries like An Inconvenient Truth continues to divide opinions, it would seem that everyone plopped down money to catch Pixar’s latest offering ($521, 268, 237 worldwide). The irony is that you can’t accuse Pixar of trying to be topical, digital animation takes forever to execute (Stanton started conceiving the film back in 1994), making Wall-E more timeless than anything.
Also see: An Inconvenient Truth, Finding Nemo, March of the Penguins
21.
Netflix Says: Fans of the HBO comedy series "Da Ali G Show" will be delighted to join one of their favorite characters -- the Kazakhstani reporter Borat (Sacha Baron Cohen, in a Golden Globe-winning role) -- as he travels to America to report on the "greatest country in the world." The boorish journalist sets off on his cross-country road trip, but his original purpose is soon subsumed by a much greater quest -- finding and marrying actress Pamela Anderson.
What it says about the aughts: Some of you may have missed it (I bet you were too busy doing Borat impressions), but Sacha Baron Cohen’s mockumentary was more of a reflection of American intolerance than just a laugh per minute.
While I would never assume that Borat was a precursor to the first African American president in history, both managed to expose America ’s xenophobia…proving that we still have a long way to go.

20.
Netflix says: Marriage has gotten stale and predictable for John and Jane Smith, an average-on-the-surface husband and wife who don't yet know that they share the same undercover line of work: They're both guns for hire. Hiding their occupations has never been a hardship for either of them … until they discover that their next assignment involves them targeting each other. Can they go through with their respective missions, or will love prevail?
What it says about the aughts: Tabloid culture reigned supreme in the ‘00s, and while there are worse examples than Mr. and Mrs. Smith, the film’s success can be equated to the controversy surrounding the film. Five years later, grocery store check-outs are still graced with images of a sneering Jennifer Aniston and a suspicious looking Angelina Jolie sandwiching photos of an angst addled Brad Pitt…at least the movie was good.
Also see: The Dark Knight
19.
Netflix says: When a sacred Buddha statuette called Ong-bak is stolen from Ting's (Tony Jaa) village by a shady businessman intent on realizing a profit from his ill-gotten gain, Ting takes it upon himself to reclaim the pilfered religious treasure by following the trail of clues to Bangkok . And Ting's the right man for the job, as he possesses an impressive array of Muay Thai fighting skills that can lay out all his adversaries.
What it says about the aughts: By the time you read this in 2010, Hollywood may have finally superseded the stuntman. With films like Beowulf and Avatar the looming threat of computer-generated people doing dangerous feats on film is imminent. Tony Jaa’s elbow-fest will serve as a reminder that rubbery C.G.characters are no match for the real thing.
Also see: Death Proof, Dragon Tiger Gate, Forbidden Kingdom , Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Double Dare

15.
Netflix says: After escaping from kidnappers using makeshift power armor, an ultrarich inventor and weapons maker (Robert Downey Jr.) turns his creation into a force for good by using it to fight crime. But his skills are stretched to the limit when he must face the evil Iron Monger. Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges and Terrence Howard also star in director Jon Favreau's tongue-in-cheek superhero tale based on the popular Marvel comic.
What it says about the aughts: The 2000s seemed to have an unending supply of superhero films, but few of them encapsulated America ’s decade-long experience better than Jon Favreau’s Iron Man.
Ironically, when the summer blockbuster season revved up in 2008, the damn near perfect Iron Man seemed like a questionable tent-pole for the summer film (not to mention, this was Marvel Studio’s first independent film venture). However, the audiences fell in love with Robert Downey Jr.’s smirky, hot rod-red do-gooder. Seeing the film play out it is no wonder why…
Released smack dab in the middle of an historical election year, reformed war-profiteer Tony Stark (played by Downey ) was the model of American guilt. He’s a charismatic capitalist turned POW, who sees the error of his ways and decides to promote peace, but isn’t afraid to get on the frontlines and “repulsor ray” a few terrorists to get his point across. Tony Stark/Iron Man represented all the aspects we wanted from our political candidates without coming off liberal or conservative…and he gave us an apology for his war-mongering to boot.
Also see: BatMan Begins, Lord of War, Push
14.
Netflix says: Thirty-something slacker Shaun (Simon Pegg) has no clue what to do with his life or with his relationship with his girlfriend, Liz (Kate Ashfield). But motivation comes in the form of a freak zombie attack that has once-ordinary citizens terrorizing the streets of London . With support from his well-meaning best mate (Nick Frost), Shaun acts quickly to save Liz and his mother (Penelope Wilton) from danger. But is it simply too late for heroics?
What it says about the aughts: Shaun of the Dead bypassed what most Zombie films of “the aughties” did and paid homage to George Romero instead of re-hashing the filmmaker’s Night of the Living Dead. The end result is hilariously dry but it also serves as the best example of the early millennium’s obsession with the “geek chic.”
In past decades, the stereotypical movie nerd usually contended with schoolyard bullies and getting the girl…in the ‘00s, supervillians, drug dealers, terrorists, and the supernatural had to look behind Arnold Schwarzenegger and fend off the brain behind the brawn. At first, it seems as though defenseless Shaun has to sort out his life by battling the undead, but really he’s just killing time before he can plug in his Playstation.
Also see: Zombieland, Napolean Dynamite, King of Kong, Spider-Man 2, Drag Me to Hell, 28 Days Later
13.
Netflix says: A one-night stand results in an unexpected pregnancy for entertainment reporter Alison (Katherine Heigl), who vows to be a good mom and keep her career on track by trying to make things work with the slacker (Seth Rogen) who knocked her up. It's anything but smooth sailing as the odd couple gets acquainted, but Alison finds there's more to her baby's daddy than she originally thought. Paul Rudd co-stars in this Judd Apatow romantic comedy.
What it says about the aughts: Americans may want to pretend that we are the epitome of good ol’ Christian family values, but the reality of it is that today’s family probably looks less like Ozzie and Harriet and more like Seth Rogen and Katherine Heigel’s characters in Knocked Up. As far as movies are concerned, family dysfunction is old hat, but films of the last decade gave up trying to justify the dysfunction and just became comfortable with it.
Also see: Steve Zissou and the Life Aquatic, It’s… Complicated, Pursuit of Happyness, Juno

9.
Netflix says: Bob Parr (voiced by Craig T. Nelson) has given up his superhero days to log in time as an insurance adjuster and raise his three children with his formerly heroic wife (Holly Hunter) in suburbia. But when he receives a mysterious assignment, it's time to get back into costume. Jason Lee, Samuel L. Jackson and Elizabeth Peña lend their voices to this Academy Award-winning Pixar charmer from writer-director Brad Bird.
What it says about the aughts: As stated earlier, the past decade revived the defunct superhero genre with belligerence, but none of the comic-to-screen adaptations out did Pixar’s The Incredibles. The film’s distinction comes from its’ commentary, the notion that us non-super powered beings have gotten carried away with leveling the playing field. We’ve made our lives too easy, placing general self-esteem over genuine achievement. In the real world, where kids who graduate high school can barely read a sentence, mood stabilizers are treated as a cure all, and technology gives us a reason to never leave the house, The Incredibles’ timing couldn’t be better.
Also see: X2: X-Men United, Spider-Man 2, Finding Nemo

7.
Netflix says: After learning that his mercurial ex-girlfriend, Clementine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet), has undergone an experimental medical process to purge all memories of him, mild-mannered Joel Barish (Jim Carrey) opts for the same procedure. But during the operation, he decides he doesn't want to lose what's left of their relationship and tries to conceal her image in his memory cells. This quirky romantic comedy won an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
What it says about the aughts: Like the slacker of the ‘90s, the hipster sub-culture dominated the independent film scene of the “naughts.” While the definition of the hipster movement may be ambiguous, Michel Gondry’s Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind stood out by managing to summarize this generation’s peculiar notion of romance and heart break.
Also see: Away We Go, Be Kind Rewind, Up in the Air, Garden State

5.
Netflix says: After coming within one question of winning it all on the Indian version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?," 18-year-old Mumbai "slumdog" Jamal Malik (Dev Patel) is arrested on suspicion that he cheated his way to the top. While in custody, he regales a jaded inspector (Irfan Khan) with remarkable tales of his life on the streets and the story of the woman (Freida Pinto) he loved and lost. Danny Boyle directs this Oscar-winning Best Picture.
What it says about the aughts: By giving Slumdog Millionaire a Best Picture Oscar, Hollywood wants you to believe that they are at the forefront of some sort of multiculturalism movement. While I seriously doubt that, I am willing to argue that the critical and financial success of Slumdog Millionaire on the heels of post-9/11 anti-brown people paranoia is a hope-filled sign that the next decade will bring Hollywood one more step away from racist stereotypes.
Also see: Bend it like Beckham, Akeelah and the Bee, The Princess and the Frog, Crash, Good Hair
4.
Netflix says: Alfonso Cuaron directs this Oscar-nominated film version of P.D. James's classic dystopian novel, a futuristic drama set in a world in which humans have lost the ability to reproduce and subsequently face certain extinction. Things change when a single woman mysteriously becomes pregnant, prompting a conflicted government bureaucrat (Clive Owen) and his ex-wife (Julianne Moore) to join forces to protect her. Michael Caine co-stars.
What it says about the aughts: …but that’s not what Children of Men is really about. No, Children of Men is about EVERYTHING! It’s about big brother, it’s about loss, it’s about symbolism, about maternal instincts, immigration, extinction, terrorism, our future, faith, and chance. Sometimes all in one breath.
Also see: Munich , Scanner Darkly, Jesus Camp, Hurt Locker
3.
Netflix says: In the first volume of this gritty revenge saga written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, an assassin (Uma Thurman) is shot at the altar by her ruthless employer, Bill (David Carradine), and other members of their assassination circle. But "The Bride" lives to plot her vengeance. Setting out for some payback, she makes a death list and hunts down those who wronged her (including a one-eyed Daryl Hannah), saving Bill for last.
In the second installment of Quentin Tarantino's outrageously inventive Kill Bill series, the Bride (Uma Thurman) unwaveringly continues on her "roaring rampage of revenge" against the band of assassins who had tried to kill her and her unborn child. The woman visits each of her former associates one by one, checking off the victims on her Death List Five until there's nothing left to do … but kill Bill (David Carradine).
What it says about the aughts: The last 10 years were overrun by remakes of…well…anything. Yet Kill Bill somehow managed to melt down director Quentin Tarantino’s favorite genres of yesteryear, pouring them into an unseemly, yet perfect Samurai/Spaghetti Western/Crime/Revenge flick confection…best served cold.
Also see: Oldboy, Death Proof, Black Dynamite, Ichi The Killer, No Country for Old Men
2.
Netflix says: Living with her tyrannical stepfather (Sergi López) in a new home with her pregnant mother, 10-year-old Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) feels alone until she explores a decaying labyrinth guarded by the mysterious Pan (Doug Jones), an ancient satyr who claims to know her destiny. If she wishes to return to her real father, Ofelia must complete three terrifying tasks in director Guillermo del Toro's Oscar-winning fairy tale for grown-ups.
What it says about the aughts: While American cinema reveled in torture porn for the last 10 years, filmmakers from other parts of the world reinvented the squeal. Pan’s Labyrinth is a fantasy in the Grimm fairy tale sense, but by today’s standards the film’s morbid intensity rivals the psyches of Jigsaw, Michael Myers, Jason, and Freddy Krueger. The films below reclaimed the concept of the horror film, but Mexico’s Pan’s Labyrinth stood out above all for it’s demented detail and it’s unsettling nature.
Also see: The Orphanage, Inside, Let the Right Ones in, The Others, Audition, The Prestige
1.
Netflix says: From the idyllic shire of the Hobbits to the smoking chasms of Mordor, director Peter Jackson has created a world that surpasses the expectations of J.R.R. Tolkien purists as Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood) embarks on his epic quest for the one true ring. The movie -- which nabbed 13 Oscar nominations -- is superbly cast with actors such as Ian McKellen (Gandalf) and Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn), and stays remarkably true to the book.
What it says about the aughts: Escapism made a huge comeback in the 2000s. While you could equate that to the success of The Matrix and Star Wars Episode 1 a decade earlier, it was Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring that solidified the base (Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone gets to co-sign). Fantasy, science fiction, and superheroes had all but vanished from Hollywood by the late ‘90s, leaving a void for geeks that wouldn’t be truly filled until Peter Jackson’s highly detailed, extremely faithful, and truly masterful adaptation.

Everyone thinks the "War on Windows" is a joke! Everyone thinks the Android Massacre is anti-cymite technobabble! Well, i hope you're happy, Flight of the Conchords, your attempt at humor just gave the android army a marching song!
Long ago, I took an oath to love all humans despite their blatant disregard towards our mission, so I will just simply say that I hope the "Conchords" survive long enough to realize the error of their ways.
Shameful.

[Trailer Trash] Kick Ass clip and red band trailer
Based of an Icon/Marvel Comics series, Kick Ass would seem like your typical comic film, but the movie's emphasis on gun-wielding kiddie violence and superhero satire, makes it less acceptable for the general public. I'm almost counting on the fact that it will polarize most viewers like Watchmen did the previous year (for different reasons though).
Reconfirming my theory, Lionsgate released a ultra-violent "red band" trailer and a darkly comic movie clip....
